Arguably one of the world's best girths!

Mattes girths are made of a system of internal strapping working against a plastic centre peice and are a result of decades of research. The result is absolutely even pressure distribution, many anatomical girths claim to achieve this but can actually have the reverse effect and create pressure on the sternum. The slimline girth we stock is an updated version of the mattes girth which is flatter and gives more elbow room again.

We love the easy to use spring buckles, making girthing much more pleasant for horse & rider.

CONSTRUCTION
Detachable lambskin-cover.
Material of girth: Visible surfaces in black leather (available by custom order in Black, brown and champagne).
Inner Quilt, plastic insert has to be removed for washing and drying.

SIZING
It is important when choosing the length of Mattes short girth for your horse that you take into consideration adequate length. A girth which is too short may gall and cause damage to the girth as well. It is recommended that the flap is positioned as high as possible above the elbow. As a guide the distance between the saddle flap and the buckle end should be no more than 15cm. Remember to always girth your horse evenly on both sides.

Length is always specified from buckle-end to buckle-end.

WHAT SHAPE IS RIGHT FOR MY HORSE?
ANATOMIC
For horses with good conformation.
The Elbow section is cut back to allow extra room for the elbow. Generally know as the "universal" girth.

ASYMMETRIC
For horses with more buldge below and a wide ribcage and/or with an awkward girth groove.
The deeper recess in the elbow area allows even more clearance for the elbow than the anatomic girth.

CRESCENT
Specifically designed to fit horses with a narrow front and a bulginh ribcage starting directly behind the elbow. Often to be found in short backed horses (typical in Arab mares for instance) where other girths don't give enough room.
The crescent girth is cut in a way that it opens to the rear in the sides and below to accomodate the far forward reaching buldge. Most of theses horses do not have an appreciable or no girth groove at all.

ATHLETICO
This girth has a specific fit adapted to horses with an athletic, wedge shaped body.
In a way it solves the reversed problem that the crescent girth was designed for. The saddle has a tendency to slip backwards, also pulling the girth backwards, because all the lines of the horse’s body:
back, ribcage and sternum to belly taper towards the rear.
So, instead of opening to the rear this girth simply opens to the front, to a degree. Naturally, the internal construction is essential for the function of the girth. This design was developed because this specific problem was pointed out by several riders and horse owners on quite a few jumpers and specifically in eventing horses.
